Marshal Phillipe Petain the future leader of the part of France that was collaborating with Adolf Hitler, stated: “In three weeks, England will have her neck wrung like a chicken.” This prompted Churchill’s strong retort. Adolf Hitler’s forces had easily marched into France and the world was a very scary place at that time, as it is today. The grit of Churchill inspired Canadians to rally to Churchill’s call to defeat Adolf Hitler and his juggernaut. Why should Canadians stand up to the bully figure of Trump today? Because it does matter when Trump pushes us around and shows he does not respect us as a people. The world is again headed in a very dangerous direction, and as the old saying tells us, the world has a way of beating its path to our door. The dangers signals are there with Trump. No sooner had he won a massive victory in the Presidential election than he began parading out the most frightening, self-serving, mega-rich individuals to conduct his faulty vision for the United States, Canada and the World. The recently deposed Syrian dictator, Bashar Assad, and Donald Trump have a great deal in common. They have demanded loyalty above all else and they view their past or potential power as essential to “their” world.
We cannot pretend that the world will go away, and we cannot simply look the other way when Trump threatens us and says he will impose a 25 per cent tariff on all imports from Canada. Regrettably, Trump has effectively implemented a divide and conquer strategy against Canada. Regrettably, Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta, says she wants to continue to export her province’s oil to the U.S. On the other hand, Premier Doug Ford says he is prepared to cut back on electric power sales to the American states. David Eby the Premier of British Columbia says he is prepared to do the same. Both these premiers are talking like they mean business. Good for them. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he is prepared fortify the border with the U.S. to ward off the 25 per cent tariff. This is a part of the solution, but it is not enough. The power of a dictator is a very insidious thing. Dictators use fear to persuade people around them to do their bidding at every twist in the road and with every opportunity. We see other types of power grabs in the proposed administration of Donald Trump. Elon Musk, reputed to be the world’s richest billionaire, has risen to a place of frightening prominence within Trump’s administration. In his new position in President-elect Trump’s cabinet, Musk is responsible for drastically reducing the size of the American government, which he has relied on for billions of dollars worth of support and investments, including his electric car firm Tesla, and his SpaceX exploration company, flying over our heads. Until now, such holdings in the hands of the person responsible for making cuts to the government bureaucracy, would be considered a gross conflict of interest, but not under Trump. It doesn’t end there – another incredibly wealthy person, Mark Zuckerberg, the main owner of the high-tech firm, Meta, which operates Face Book, Instagram, and Whatspp Messenger, among others, has announced that he is donating $1 million to the inaugural event of Donald Trump. Both Musk and Zuckerberg have been in a position to buy their way into the Trump administration’s inner workings. Bravo to Premiers Ford, and Eby for resisting. As Canadians we must stand up to Trump with the tools that are available to us. It’s time for Canada to call Trump’s bluff. Churchill would settle for nothing less.
