There are plenty of signs that Canadians are fed up with Donald Trump and his buddies and are not going to take it anymore. None the less, this sentiment is being expressed very visibly with good old-fashioned patriotism. Here are a few examples: Note the response to Connor McDavid’s overtime goal to win the Four Nations Face Off in Boston. This writer was watching the big game in a Canadian-owned Boston Pizza outlet, when the greatest hockey player in the world scored his goal. Every man and woman launched into gleeful shouts, hugging complete strangers in triumph. Secondly, all five of Canada’s surviving former prime ministers, three of them Conservative and two Liberal, urged Canadians to fly the red and white Maple Leaf flag on Feb. 15th the 60th anniversary of the blessing of the flag during Lester Pearson’s time as PM. Across Canada, the Maple Leaf Flag began sprouting in doorways and driveways. One interesting case in point occurred in Saint Andrews, N.B., where Mary Casement, who dresses the stuffed beaver outside her home according to the season and the weather, happily festooned her pet beaver in Maple Leaf flags. A third example can be found far away. Canadian men’s soccer national team head coach Jesse Marsch, an American, issued a strong rebuke to President Trump’s comments on Canada potentially becoming the 51st state of the United States. Marsch called Trump’s persistent comments “unsettling and frankly insulting.” “Canada is a strong, independent nation that is deep-rooted in decency…and it’s a place that values high ethics and respect,” Marsch said. Bravo Mr. Marsch. Here is yet another example which involves one of Trump’s henchmen, Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and the prideful father of the Tesla e-car. He poured many millions of dollars into Trump’s election campaign last fall and aspired to have one of his rockets carry the Stars and Stripes to plant on planet Mars.
Musk is also the man who supports fascist political parties in Europe and gave the Heil Hitler salute at Trump’s inauguration. Over 45,000 Canadians died fighting Hitler during World War Two, and for this and many related reasons, Musk is not at all popular in this country. It is no wonder that more than one third of a million Canadians have signed a petition. launched by British Columbia author, Qualia Reed, calling for the Canadian government to revoke Musk’s Canadian citizenship and passport. Federal Immigration department experts say it might require a legislative change to allow the revoking to go ahead. But as the old saying says, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness or the respect of others.” A quote from the movie Forrest Gump says it well: “There’s only so much money a man really needs, the rest is just showing off.” Here is a final example. We all know that the Russia-Ukraine war began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Yet, Trump seems to believe that Ukraine was the aggressor in the war, and that the conflict can be stopped through discussions between himself and the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, with no regard for Ukraine. Furthermore, Trump is blackmailing Ukraine into a deal to transfer ownership of its critical minerals, notably titanium, to the U.S. in exchange for continued financial aid from the USA. Trump is also very interested in Canada’s critical minerals, and this may very well explain his continuing attacks on Canada as a sovereign nation. Trump is determined to insult our flag, our national game, and our sovereignty. His buddy, Musk, insists on peddling fascism throughout the world, and Trump insults the long-suffering people of Ukraine. The everyday Canadian sees through all this and is saying, “no way.”
